A standard image zoomer, image magnifier, or enlarger just replaces the small image with a larger one which is kinda what you want, but the hidden burden/cost is creating, storing and managing one or more extra images. This hidden cost is sometimes hard to identify as it has become a standard procedure with so many development efforts, but if you can identify this effort, and do a true cost analysis, it will likely show it ranging up to as much as 20% of all your site efforts/cost over time.
